The purpose of the discussion group, considering a range of issues related to Australian Indigenous people, is to deepen members’ understanding of Australian Indigenous people’s experiences, past and present; the effects of government policies and practices on their lives; and the impact of non-Indigenous preconceptions about them which hinder the social progress which will benefit all Australians.

Content and activities: Following the failed referendum, I am proposing we broaden the scope from book discussion to include other activities. We will continue to discuss the work of Indigenous fiction and non-fiction writers such as Tony Birch, Marcia Langton and Stan Grant. We will also explore works by non-Indigenous authors who have contributed to ongoing debates about Australian history and society such as Bill Stanner and Henry Reynolds. The group may also include discussions of current Victorian developments such as the Yoorook Justice Commission and the First People’s Assembly. We may invite First Nations speakers to address us and we may visit Melbourne cultural institutions, such as the Koorie Heritage Trust.

REQUIREMENTS: Preparedness to source and read the books which the group chooses for discussion; preparedness to take turns in leading discussion.

TUTOR: Sue has taught in secondary schools, TAFE colleges and Monash University, where she has also held research positions in the Department of History and the Centre for Indigenous Studies. She is the author of a number of articles and book chapters as well as two books: ‘Black and White Together: FCAATSI, the Federal Council for the Advancement of Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders, 1958-1973’, UQP, 2005, and ‘A White Hot Flame: Mary Montgomerie Bennett, Author, Educator, Activist for Indigenous Justice’, Monash University Publishing, 2018. She is also the author of the website ‘Collaborating for Indigenous Rights’ which is hosted by the National Museum of Australia

  • Go to the Courses & Enrolling page.
  • Scroll down to find the course that you are interested in.
  • Does the course have spaces available?
    • Click on the course name to go to the booking page.
    • Click on “Book for this course or event”.
    • You will receive a confirmation email.  Please check your Junk/Spam folders as these automatically-generated emails often finish up there.
  • OR is the course shown as FULL?
    • Click on WAITLIST.

Paper Enrolment Form: before bookings open for First Semester

  • Obtain a paper Enrolment Form either from the Office or by printing an online copy available here.
  • Complete the paper Enrolment Form and submit it to the Office.

The start date for acceptance of paper Enrolment Forms for first semester is published on the U3APP website and in the e-Bulletin. Enrolment Forms received before this date are treated as though they had been received on the start date (ie there is no advantage to be gained by submitting early). On the start date and thereafter, paper Enrolment Forms are numbered in order of receipt.  Paper Enrolment forms are processed by U3APP volunteers on the same day as on-line bookings.
