Other information

The course comprises sixteen 45-minute lectures on the development of the musical genre generally classified as Broadway Musicals. The examination starts in 1828 and ends in the present. Areas examined include the Minstrel era (1828-1900), Ragtime, Vaudeville Tin Pan Alley and Into the Jazz era. Later composers visited are Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, Rodgers and Hammerstein and more.

Be advised that the very early segments of the lecture series examine Afro-Americans participation in musical evolution and the use of “Blackface”. As the use of this vehicle was part of the development of American music it will not be omitted from the course.

Each class will comprise two 45-minute lectures with a break between the segments to allow discussion or coffee break.

Our lecturer is Dr Bill Messenger, lectures at The Peabody Institute of the John Hopkins University.
