This 32-lecture course presented by Professor Robert Greenberg comprises a brief history of opera, its development and growth. He traces the development of Italian opera as well as Opera Buffa and Bel Canto styles using as examples of each, Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and The Barber of Seville, respectively. Four lectures are devoted to Verdi and Othello, then multiple lectures covering French Opera and German Opera (Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde. He finishes with late romantic German Opera (Strauss) and Russian opera. The last two lectures cover verismo, Puccini and Tosca.

NOTE: Two videos will be presented in each session, with a short break between them. We may have an occasional gathering in a face-to-face context, regulations allowing.

REQUIREMENTS: Desire to learn more about opera.

TUTOR: Jim has presented a number of courses at U3APP, including the evolution of the English language, histories of ancient civilisations in North, South and Central Americas, Egyptian pharaohs , perception, vocabulary and a host of other courses. Jim has a BSc and MSc in biological sciences from Oregon State University, USA. He was on the U3APP CoM from 2018 to 2021 and a member of the COVID-19 Working Group.


Classes will still run on the following holiday dates: 14 March (Labour Day), 11 April (school holidays), 25 April (Anzac Day)

There will be no Class on 18 April (Easter Monday)
