Other information
This program offers the learning of folk dances from around the world. The sessions also include a short element of warm-up exercises & games to prepare for the dancing and to increase flexibility & stamina. The goals of the program are to enhance strength, balance, coordination and memory. Socialisation is another benefit from the joy of dancing. No experience is required, no partners. Dances taught are simple to start, gradually building up to a varied and stimulating repertoire. Teaching is with a relaxed, fun approach & perfection is not expected. Comfortable clothing and supportive footwear are recommended. Allow for removal of layers as you warm up.
NB. This class is now a two-hour class, from 11.00 – 1.00. The first half hour
(11.00 – 11.30) will be dedicated to beginners and those needing extra tuition in the common dance steps and other basics so that they can comfortably join in with the participants returning from previous years. Beginners and some others might want to stay less than two hours. This is fine, but beginners definitely need to be present for the 11.00 – 11.30 section.
REQUIREMENTS: No experience necessary; no partner needed; basic fitness required (relevant to age). Comfortable clothing, allowing freedom of movement, eg jeans/slacks or skirt/dress, T-shirt and pullover, allowing to remove one layer when warmed up; comfortable supportive footwear eg joggers, “health” sandals with back-strap, both to be worn with cotton socks. Bare feet are unacceptable for health and safety reasons.
TUTORS: Naomi (Noni) Gordon is an experienced Occupational Therapist (Past Senior Clinician in Gerontology). She has used her Occupational Therapy training and extensive dance experience to choreograph and teach dance sessions, appropriate to skill levels, in hospital and community settings
