Stoicism, a school of Hellenistic philosophy which originated in the third century BCE, is popularly linked with a philosophy of life which encourages us to be resilient and ‘stoical’ in the face of circumstances over which we have no control. In this form, it has understandably enjoyed a resurgence in popularity over the past two years. However there is much more to the philosophy of stoicism which is a remarkably integrated study of logic, physics, cosmology, and ethics. In this subject, we will undertake a critical exploration of these various aspects of Stoic thought.
TUTOR: Maurita has taught and researched philosophy at local and overseas universities. She continues her research in the area as an Honorary Senior Fellow in Philosophy at the University of Melbourne.
NOTE: no class on 8 March or 31 May, last class 7 June.
