Based on the book of the same name, this subject seeks to explore philosophical questions about non-human animal minds and sentience within an evolutionary framework. Each class is based on a different chapter or two from the book and covers topics such as consciousness; subjects, agents, selves; sense, pain and emotions; ethical implications. “Metazoa” is an ancient word for the “animal kingdom” as differentiated from other classes of living things such as plants.

REQUIREMENTS: Metazoa: Animal Minds and the Birth of Consciousness, by Peter Godfrey-Smith (Harper Collins) 2020. Reading this book is highly recommended.

TUTOR: Maurita has taught and researched philosophy at local and overseas universities. She continues her research in the area as an Honorary Senior Fellow in Philosophy at the University of Melbourne.
