In this subject we explore philosophical perspectives from Aristotle to Singer on the status of non-human animals, and how these stand up to findings from recent research into animal cognition, emotion, and communication. Topics include:

  • Are animals capable of rational action?
  • Are they capable of empathy?
  • How do animals communicate?
  • The moral status of animals

REQUIREMENTS: Access to email as Internet resources are recommended in preparation for each class.
