The course will focus each week on a place or set of places that has been or is in the process of being inscribed on the World Heritage List. Sites will be drawn from Australia, Asia, Europe and South America. Management problems at the sites will be discussed as well as difficulties facing the UNESCO World Heritage program in general. Class members will be invited to reminisce about or show their own slides of sites they have visited.
TUTOR: Alongside his work at various Melbourne universities, William (Bill) acted as a consultant to UNESCO’s Paris-based World Heritage Centre and for ICOMOS, also in Paris, from 1986 to 2022. This has involved helping countries to nominate sites for inscription, examining nominations and monitoring inscribed sites that are experiencing problems. These countries have mostly been in Asia, but he has also done heritage work in Europe, Australia and the Pacific.
