Other information

This is a course on premodern history from about the year 1 to about 1400, but it is history told with a twist: It describes major events and ideas through the experience of women who lived through these times.  Although you may be familiar with some of this history, you will see it in a new way through the lenses of women’s lives and writings.

Arranged chronologically, the course covers a long period of time, beginning in the West with the establishment of the Roman Empire in 27 BCE and ends at the close of the Middle Ages in about 1453 with the dawn of the Renaissance.

The course is presented via DVD lectures by Professor Joyce Salisbury, University of Wisconsin.  Two – 30 videos will be shown each class session, with time for discussion during an intermission.

The course will continue uninterrupted through term break (s).

REQUIREMENTS: Curiosity about history.

TUTOR:  Jim, a retired research biologist, has been an active participant in U3APP by being a member of the Committee of Management for 3 years, a member of the COVID-19 Working Group and tutor for more than 15 courses covering history, music, language evolution and other disciplines.

  • Does the course have spaces available?

Paper Enrolment Form: before bookings open for First Semester

  • Obtain a paper Enrolment Form either from the Office or by printing an online copy available here.
  • Complete the paper Enrolment Form and submit it to the Office.

The start date for acceptance of paper Enrolment Forms for first semester is published on the U3APP website and in the e-Bulletin. Enrolment Forms received before this date are treated as though they had been received on the start date (ie there is no advantage to be gained by submitting early). On the start date and thereafter, paper Enrolment Forms are numbered in order of receipt.  Paper Enrolment forms are processed by U3APP volunteers on the same day as on-line bookings.

If your enrolment is successful, you will receive a confirmation email.  Please check your Junk/Spam folders as these automatically-generated emails often finish up there.

If your enrolment is unsuccessful,  you will receive an email telling you that you have been waitlisted.
