The story of New France is largely forgotten, yet France’s colonisation in North America profoundly changed world history, and once again influences current events.
The course tells this story from the perspectives of the five very different cultures that struggled to dominate the continent between 1500 and 1800. It examines the role played by geo-politics, religion, race, individuals, and by luck and sheer stupidity. It uncovers great vision, feats of exploration, acts of national shame, and will question some very famous reputations. Ultimately, it will show how these events gave rise to the two global powers of the 19th and 20th centuries – and also how it so nearly turned out very differently.
TUTOR: Since retiring (early) Ian has tutored at Monash University, ran seminars on retirement for National Seniors Australia, and for nearly 20 years has taught classes at a number of U3As on a variety of topics. He is not a historian but has an interest in researching historical topics whose significance he believes to be not well understood.
