Burnley Gardens, Richmond
A volunteer-guided tour of Burnley Gardens, Richmond that gives an overview of the history of the site and gardens as well
describing the design features. The nine-hectare gardens are home to nearly a thousand different species of plants, including some
of the oldest trees in Melbourne. Located on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people, the gardens have evolved since the
1860’s as a location for research & teaching. There are a number of significant trees and exotic garden plantings as well as ponds
and an indigenous area. There are some experimental low water usage beds which use heavy mulching rather than the traditional
English Style Garden bed management. The previous large orchard has mostly been removed and replaced with student research
projects. The original College Building remains as well as later additions.
