Other information

This course will be presented in a series of two-hour classes with each week covering particular aspects of the history and development of the area which was formerly Emerald Hill, and later, The City of South Melbourne (but not the even later areal expansion to the City of Port Phillip).

Like all history, it is “partial” in so far as it will focus on a diverse range of topics selected by the tutor. In general, it will explore the very early building and social activity, but especially focus on the 1850s “Gold Rush” period and the later consequences in terms of actual buildings and the corresponding social fabric. The specific aspects covered will generally reflect the tutor’s academic background and interests: the built form, architecture and social and political history.

TUTOR: Max Nankervis is a Town Planner who has a particular interest in the history of the development of the urban built form. He has been an academic at several Melbourne universities and has published various associated papers in academic journals and is a contributor to local history publications. He is also the facilitator for the U3APP Heritage and Architecture Walks (see course 4W03).

Classes will be held on Zoom if COVID-19restrictions do not allow face-to-face classes
