Other information

This is a class for those who can play the recorder. We play three and four part harmony. Some music background is a pre-requisite even if it was a long time ago! We need a range of recorders, descant, treble, tenor and bass. Descant players will be required to transfer to tenor as we need more tenor players. The fingering is the same for both instruments.
Participants must have their own recorder, music stand and a display book to keep repertoire. It is advisable to contact the tutor prior to first session to discuss music background, choice of instrument and any other concerns. We are a very welcoming group and look forward to giving you a go!
The emphasis is on ensemble playing. A degree of sight reading of the treble clef is necessary i.e. pitch and rhythm and an ability to keep the beat. Teaching has a focus on good tuning and different articulations e.g. long sounds, short sounds. We are not a performance group. We play for enjoyment and to improve. We share our music with fellow U3A members in Seniors Week.
REQUIREMENTS: Must have experience playing recorder, or transferring from another musical instrument.
NOTE: The consort is enrolled as a member of the Victorian Recorder Guild.
TUTOR: Mary is a former teacher of piano and has a BA (Music) from another lifetime. She has been playing recorder for 13 years and has been a member of Ballarat U3A under June Johnstone. She was also in Quinta, a quintet formed from members of the U3A group. While in Ballarat she undertook groups of beginners. She is passionate about the recorder, its history and historic repertoire as well as a more modern application. She is a member of the Victorian Recorder Guild and regularly attends events.
