Other information

Depth of each tasting plate negotiable at outset, subject to attendee appetites:
1. 300-200 BC – Euclid, Archimedes, geometry, root pi (sic) bw 22/7 and 223/71
2. Shapes and numbers – Golden Ratio and Fibonacci – constructing a duodecahedron from a stack of credit cards
3. Roman numerals/abacus supplanted by Hindu-Arabic, Leonardo Pisano (later known as Fibonacci) ‘Liber Abaci’ Italy 1228
4. Tiling the plane, from Alhambra 13/14th century to Penrose 1977
5. Newton v Leibnitz – whose calculus?
6. Godel and Turing – incomplete, inconsistent, undecidable – surely not – reference Hofstader “Godel, Escher, Bach” and “Rubik’s Cube” 1981
7. Insanely great – Apple GUI “Inside Macintosh”(1985) and DIY Apps – then to now
8. Artificial Intelligence and driverless cars – no steering wheel at level 5!
Mathematics is a fulsome meal – any of the eight tasting plates could be a main course, engaging additional guest lecturers to taste.

REQUIREMENTS: Pencil, paper, compass, straight edge (maybe Rubik).

TUTOR: Kevin graduated from Melbourne University in Engineering (1968) and Planning (1972). Reacting to 1984 Ash Wednesday bushfires, he turned to a career of safety critical system software safety assurance, deeply mathematical.
