Other information

Zoe Caldwell OBE was an Australian born actress who gained international fame.  She began her professional work as an actor in Australia, although her career, which spanned seventy years, was mainly on stages in Stratford on Avon, Leningrad, Moscow, London, Minneapolis, New York, and Ontario.

She toured Australia with the Elizabethan Theatre Trust in the 1950s including a production of Twelfth Night with Barry Humphries. After leaving our shores she returned to the Australian stage with three major productions between 1962 and 2002. There were many performances for the gifted Caldwell: notably Lady Macbeth opposite Sean Connery, Bianca in Othello (with Paul Robeson) as well as Cleopatra to Christopher Plummer’s Antony, Saint Joan, Medea, Jean Brodie in the Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Maria Callas in Masterclass and Mother Courage. She acted with acting royalty.

She won four Tony awards on Broadway, three in collaboration with her producer-husband Robert Whitehead.

Zoe Caldwell also became a prestigious stage director directing many productions including Macbeth (1988) starring Plummer and Glenda Jackson and Park Your Car in Harvard Yard (1991) starring Judith Ivey and Jason Robards. She also directed Eileen Atkins and Vanessa Redgrave in the 1994 off-Broadway romantic drama Vita and Virginia.

In this Saturday Seminar, Sherryn Danaher, U3APP member and niece of Zoe Caldwell,  will explore the illustrious career and achievements of Zoe Caldwell via a conversation with Zoe’s son Charlie Whitehead, a theatre producer resident in New York.
