Presented by Robin Grow, President, Art Deco & Modernism Society of Australia
The Art Deco era produced changes to designs in multiple fields, including furniture and jewellery. Existing furniture styles were re-modelled, often employing a dramatic geometric aesthetic and using new materials such as chrome and metals, exotic woods. New types of furniture emerged, often mass-produced and in response to changes in tastes and habits in society, such as cocktail cabinets, telephone tables, smokers stands and radio consoles.
Jewellery also underwent dramatic changes. Linked to fashion in dress, it became simpler and more severe and reflected geometric design. Precious stones and materials were still used and the high-end jewellers in Europe flourished in the 1920s, including Cartier, Van Cleef et Arpels, Boucheron and others. New influences from Africa and the Orient became common and there was an explosion of colour in styling used for bracelets, pendants, brooches, rings, watches and earrings. Perhaps the most dramatic change was the use of the new material Bakelite, which was colourful and stylish and brought jewellery to the masses.
Robin Grow is the long-term President of the Art Deco & Modernism Society of Australia, an international organisation. He is committed to the preservation of interwar and Modernist buildings and is active in this field. Robin regularly writes and presents on Art Deco and Modernism.
