ROBIN GROW, President of the Art Deco & Modernism Society, will describe (and show) how the interwar years saw a new spirit of modernism transform Melbourne into a wonderful centre of Art Deco (the first truly international style). This was a time of enormous changes to society – motor cars, the changing role of women as consumers, fashion, dance and music, clothing and cocktails!
Art Deco style could be seen in brand new buildings or updating of existing buildings, with new materials, bright colours and new building processes. Excessive ornamentation was discarded – finishes were smooth and unadorned. The style could be seen everywhere – from A (apartment blocks) to Z (Melbourne Zoo), and in the famous train called the Spirit of Progress. Designs featured murals, large expanses of glass, stylized building signs, and cantilevered balconies. Preservation efforts on buildings from this era will also be highlighted.
Robin Grow is the long-term President of the Art Deco & Modernism Society, an international organisation based in Melbourne. He is committed to the preservation of interwar and Modernist buildings and is active in this field. He regularly writes and presents on this subject.
