Date: on/from Sat 15 May 2021 to Sat 15 May 2021
Frequency: Single Event
Class time: 2:30-3:30
Presented by Helen Robinson, facllitated by Linda Condon.
In this talk Helen Robinson will provide a brief introduction to Australian Indigenous Art today using ten objects taken from the collection of the NGV to demonstrate the diversity and range of this global art movement.
Helen has been a guide at the NGV for ten years and has a keen interest in Australian First Nations art. She has studied Australian Indigenous art at the University of Melbourne.
The illustrated talk will place the selected objects in their cultural context and explain how ancient designs and meanings used in ritual and ceremony for tens of thousands of years have been transformed into contemporary art works that are highly valued around the world and are immediately recognizable as “Australian”; and how this transformation enriches our own sense of a unique Australian cultural identity.
After a career in the UN at FAO (Food & Agriculture Organisation) and WHO (World Health Organisation), Helen Robinson returned to Melbourne and has been a guide at the NGV for 10 years, where her special interests are in Asian art, contemporary art and particularly Australian Indigenous art.
She has studied Australian Indigenous Art at the University of Melbourne and VCA. She is a sociologist by training and has an honorary position at the Nossal Institute for Global Health, University of Melbourne, where she is involved global networks that promote the equitable and ethical integration of human genomics into health systems in low- and middle-income countries. She is also currently on several boards and committees.
Linda Condon is an artist and U3APP art tutor.
