In our final seminar for 2021 Dr Michael Adcock talked about the advent of Impressionism in 19th century France amidst the expansion of the railways, the development of oil paints in tubes and the invention of the camera. All these factors combined to enable artists to be released from the confines of the studio, to delight in the beauty of the countryside, and to experience the constant variations of light and the immediacy of the moment. By the late 1880s various forces were sending the Impressionists in different directions for different effects.

In this second talk Michael continues his presentation of Impressionism and the Post-Impressionists, based on paintings in the 2021 NGV Exhibition. Exploring the life and works of Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, Morisot, Caillebotte, Cezanne, van Gogh and Gaugin, Michael provides a deeper understanding of this momentous period in art history.

Michael writes and lectures regularly on French art and history, and also conducts Academy Travel tours in Paris. Currently he is Head of History and Head of Humanities at Melbourne Grammar School.
