The metaverse is the likely future of the internet, mixing the boundless information and collaboration of the world wide web with the virtual worlds of video games.
You could call it ‘the internet in 3D’. Inspired by science fiction of decades past, many companies are now working to make this future a reality. Facebook have even renamed themselves ‘Meta’ to indicate their commitment to this vision!
Rec Room is one such company. Co-founded in 2016 by ex-Melbourne game developer Cameron Brown, Rec Room has become an enormously popular place for people from all around the world to come together to play, to perform, to create, to shop, or just to spend time and make new memories together. Cameron will cover the basics of the metaverse using Rec Room as a leading example, and briefly touch on ‘web3’ – a vision of the metaverse that relies on blockchain technologies such as NFTs and cryptocurrencies.
In this presentation Cameron will use Rec Room as an example of what the metaverse is today and might become tomorrow!
The speaker Cameron Brown is based in Seattle, USA.
Cameron Brown is Chief Creative Officer and co-founder of Rec Room, a social virtual reality app where more than 37M users from all around the world play, build and share a huge variety of games and other digital experiences.
Named as one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential companies of 2022, Rec Room is a leader in the burgeoning “metaverse” space – where the internet breaks free of its “text and photos” roots and embraces the immersive 3D worlds of modern video games.
Cameron is a video game industry veteran of 27 years, who got his start in Melbourne at the legendary Beam Software in South Melbourne. Since then he’s worked as a creative director for Electronic Arts and Microsoft, before founding Rec Room in 2016.
