Camels, deserts tracks and the footprints of ancient meteorites
as experienced by Heather Wheat & Lindsay Doig

Breathtaking colours and textures, endless sweeping sunburnt plains and mighty rocky monoliths, all under a vast pitiless yet glorious blue sky: Dorothea MacKellar’s poem come to life in 2021.

We set off to tackle some of Australia’s iconic outback roads and ancient trade routes, to explore those sweeping plains, places off the tourist track – to travel the roads less travelled. This 9-month voyager à deux in our cubby house on-wheels started in the very  centre of Australia, walking the Simpson Desert along ancient Songlines accompanied by a string of magnificent, haughty camels.

Our travels took in gemfields, hidden fossil-bearing creek beds, the shattered craters of meteorites that had blasted the earth’s surface up to 142 million years ago, and so much more. It turned out to be a journey of epic proportions traversing over 40,000km with 12 border crossings and was more wonder-filled than we could have imagined.

PRESENTER: Heather Wheat’s background includes a rewarding career as a neuroscience researcher at the University of Melbourne and then 20 years in the voluntary sector, mainly in management roles. Heather and partner Lindsay were two of the founding members of U3A Port Phillip. Since then Heather and Lindsay have travelled extensively from the Arctic to Antarctica, from Far East Russia to Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, along the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Old Silk Road through Central Asia and into the Caucasus. Australia, however, remains a favourite place to explore and this presentation forms part of their latest Australian odyssey.
